LUCKY CATS MASCOTS
2012.01.19 Thursday

The lucky cat mascot. This cat is beckoning you to come here.
Why this cat is lucky cat ? There are many explanations about the lucky cat story.

The most famous story is as follows.
Looking at a cat bekoning, people moved to a temple where the cat is located. So they could escape from a disaster.

The interest thing is cat's gesture.
At first open a hand then clench a fist means " come on" in Japan.
At first clench a fist then open a hand means " go away" in the West.
Both gestures look like the same for western people.

So if you have a Japanese friend, please be careful about the gesture.
One of the famous birthplace is Imado Jinja Shrine at Asakusa in Tokyo.
If you come to Japan, you can find many lucky cat mascots at retail shops,Japanese style bars and souvenir shops.

This cat is bekoning you to enter the shop.
Is it funny or interesting?

MERRY CHRISTMAS
2011.12.21 Wednesday
Christmas is coming even in Japan.

A angel is praying.
Japan accepted Christmas as a present or a gift custom. So few people would go to church in a Christmas season.

Christmastrees.
Children until 7 or 8 years old would believe that Santa Claus come to at the midnight of Christmas Eve. So Parents would buy a Christmas present for each child and after they would sleep, one of parents woud leave a presnt for each child's bedside.

Christmas tree illuminations.
After they would notice who presented somethings to them,They would come to hold a Christmas party. If there ia a child of Buddhist priest, the child would hold a Christmas party at a guest room of a temple.

A Christmas tree.
We could hear Christmas songs from a temple. It is not so queer in Japan.
Have a happy Christmas season!

TEMPORARY REFUGE FROM TOKYO
2011.03.24 Thursday
We started from March 18th. We visited Kurasiki city at first.

Kurasiki city is about 740km far from Tokyo. This city remains Meiji period ( about 100years ago) landscape.

This city is very popular for Japanese people.
Next day, we went to the northen area in Okayama prefecture. (
Kurasiki is located in southern area in Okayama prefecture.)

This is Kibitujinja shrine This building is designated as the national treasure.
The next day, we went to the seaside resort hotel and stayed 2 days. On the way to the resort hotel, we went to see the Okayama castle.

This Okayama castle was originally built in 1597AD. Now reconstructed in 1967AD.

This castle is black color, so another name is Crow castle.

Then we arrived at the resort hotel. The hotel's staffs would say "this sea is The Aegean Sea in Japan".
Two days after, we went to Osaka. Osaka is the second largest city in Japan. Osaka is550km far from Tokyo.

We went to see Osaka castle. You can see very small castle tower at the top of this picture.

This castle was originally build in 1585AD, reconstructed in 1629AD, and one more reconstructed in 1931AD.

Generally speaking, There were no castle walls to protect the castle. The feudal lords had made the moats to protect their castles.
Staying in western area, people's life is as samae as before. There is no damage in their daily life.
But from northeastern area to metoropolitan area, The crisis remains even now.
We returned home yesterday. We felt relax staying in our house.I felt the temporary refuge is vey differnt from permanent refuge.
BIGGEST EARTHQUAKE IN JAPAN
2011.03.12 Saturday
It happend when it was 2 pm 46 minutes in March 11th.
The magnitude was 8.8. It was bigger than the earthqeake at Christchurch in N.Z which magnitude was 6.3.
Just now the total number of dead and missing people is more than 1600.
We feel very sad.
There were a little damage in Tokyo, but 5 people died in Tokyo.
All of our family is safe and there was no damage in our house.
Very strange things happened at the time for me and my companions.
I worked at Culture and Sightseeing Center in Taito city as a volanteer interpreter.
When it was at 1pm 15minutes, a young man and a woman came the center, and said that they wanted to exeperience the earthquake simulation. A man came from Canada and a woman came from USA.
I asked a firestation by telephone wether it was possible, the station staff replyed that if there was a Japanese interpreter, it was possible.
My working time was until 1PM 30minutes and the simulation would start from 2Pm30minute. So I and two foreigners went to the firestation.

From 2PM 30minutes, the earthquake movie started in the small firestation theater.
After 16minutes, the theater started to vibrate and the vibration became very strong. All people thought that the earthquake simulation started. But it was the Real Earthquake.

This building is the firestation and there is disaster drill center and the little movie theater in this building.
When we came here, there were many fire engine trucks, when leaving here I took this photo, there were no fire engine trucks.
